If you love the sea, its marine life and the corals, then you must definitely try snorkeling. It is less complicated and dangerous than diving, and requires little training. Snorkeling can be a hugely rewarding experience, but there are some risks here as well. For instance, there is always the risk of drowning.
Even very good swimmers too can get tired in the water, which is why you should always be wearing the right flotation device while doing it. This means, snorkelers should either wear a one of the best snorkeling vest or a life jacket. But you should know that there are differences between the two. They work differently and have unique advantages. You must consider the location, your swimming skill, and how easily you can ask for help to decide which one is right for you.
A Life Jacket vs. Snorkeling Vest
A vest is smaller than a life jacket and it is inflatable. Life jackets, on the other hand, are made typically of foam. The snorkeling jacket is usually meant to be used to help you swim efficiently so that you get adequate rest and don’t tire out from all that activity, which is all you need in most situations. If you are looking for buoyancy, a life jacket is probably going to be better because they will lift your head and face out of the water so that you don’t drown. But this function makes snorkeling more difficult.
So if you are to select one for your snorkeling experience, it should actually be the vest. It will keep you safe and will make your snorkeling trip better.
Life Jacket Types
There are three types of life jackets available. Type I PFD is the most buoyant. It is used for offshore swimming and keeps the face out of water. Types II and III PFDs are both less buoyant and are used in situations where you are closer to the shore.
Snorkeling Vest Types
There are two types of snorkeling vests – the horsecollar design, and the jacket style. Horsecollar is more popular. The inflatable bladder here covers the upper chest and encircles your neck. In some models, there is a strap, which goes between your legs so that the collar does not go up when you are snorkeling. In the jacket style vest, there is a hole from where you can push your arms. The front zips up.
